I’m Getting Closer…
I wrote a while ago that I would really like to replace my Casio Sea Pathfinder watch but since it still actually works I don’t feel justified in doing so. The reason I bought that watch was to replace a Suunto Vector that leaked while diving. I liked the ABC functions of the Vector but I didn’t like that it had water incursion. The watch was rated to 30 meters and I don’t think that I was close to that depth but either way, the watch leaked.
With the Vector collecting dust in the dresser drawer I was happy to come across the Casio that not only was depth rated to 100 meters but
was also solar. Batteries on my watches always seem to die when I’m in a place that I can’t find a replacement. I also like that the Casio had a depth gauge, a nice backup to my dive console. The Casio also had a water temperature gauge as well. The Vector had neither of these. Casio seemed to get out of the Sea Pathfinder series and concentrated on the ABC watches (altimeter, barometer, compass) with several new designs a models. It makes sense owing to the fact that more people climb mountains that scuba dive. Even a mountain biker would like to keep track of their altitude on their treks.
Well it’s back, kind of. Casio announced that the Gulfmaster model will now include a depth gauge along with an altimeter, barometer and compass, this makes it a quad sensor watch!
From Casio “In addition to the Quad Sensor Technology, the GULFMASTER GWNQ1000-1A contains all the features that makes G-SHOCK the leader in absolute toughness. The watch comes equipped with 200M Water Resistance and Shock Resistance, Full Auto Double LED Light, World Time with 31 time zones that include 48 cities + UTC, Barometric Pressure Alarm, Tide Indicator, 4 Daily Alarms and 1 Snooze Alarm, 1/100th second Stopwatch, Countdown Timer, 12/24 Hour Formats, and a Storm Alarm, all in a 48mm case.”
It’s slated to retail for $850 and will be available in September of this year. It looks like it might fit the bill for me if I can slide a $800 purchase past my wife…
